We're Afraid

Scared

If you ask me, I think there's a silent debate among Christians about whether it's alright to curse and swear or not. There's a silent debate about whether or not we should discourage drinking alcohol at all or simply encourage "moderation". There is a silent debate about what movies are permissible, and what movies tow the line. What music to listen to and what not to listen to. I say "silent" because it's as if people are afraid to draw the line, to make distinctions, to even talk about the issue. You risk having people not like you, for one!

Some people would argue that such issues are small and of less consequence than weightier matters such as changing systems and feeding the poor and stuff. While there is truth to that, I think it is a faulty mindset. You can't say that you will change the world when you draw a limit as to how much you will change, personally. We are part of the world, thus, changing the world includes us changing, too.

Basic
It all feels very complicated to understand. But it really isn't. It's about holiness. The big questions we need to ask are not about dos and don'ts. The big question we are to ask with every decision is, "is this a part of the lifestyle of a holy person?"

You can't be a Christian and not be holy.
We are the body of Christ.
Christ is holy.
Therefore, we are holy.
Basic.

Already Are
It's not that we should be holy. It's not that we will be holy. It's not that we should desire to be holy. If you are a part of the Body of Christ, if you claim the title "Catholic" or "Christian", if you are a person of faith, you already are holy. Right here, right now. Your current state of being is holy. Your aspirations for life reflect holiness. Your lifestyle choices reflect holiness. Your speech reflects holiness. What you laugh about and like to talk about reflects holiness. There is no other way to be a Christian.

Holiness does not mean becoming monastics or joining the cloister. It doesn't mean speaking in Bible verses. It doesn't mean perfection, right here and right now. It means pursuing the perfect ideal: Jesus. Part of holiness is an understanding that the system and ways of the world are not my system, not my way. I will live differently. I will not be evangelized by the system. Instead, I will live the revolution.

Let's not turn a deaf ear to holiness. Be not afraid. Be holy. Be what you claim to be: a part of the Body of Christ. Holy. Holy people have the Holy Spirit in them. And the Holy Spirit changes the world. If you want to change the world, you will live holy.
